Boating in Style

When it comes to enjoying time out on the boat, there are two things you should do. One, make sure you pack enough snacks and supplies to entertain yourself while over the water. The second, is to look good while out on the boat. Looking good while boating isn’t just about fashion, though, it’s about functionality. Dressing up isn’t going to do much if your high heels cause you to trip and go overboard, so what should you wear instead?

First off, it is important to make sure you are prepared for any weather situation. Once you are out on the water, you can’t just run back to shore and change clothes. If it is chilly in the morning, it might warm up around noon, and if it is sunny when you set out on the water, it may get windy or have a bit of rain later on. So check the weather before you go out, and dress appropriately for it, while being prepared for any unexpected changes.

Next, you are going to want to make sure you have the right shoes on for your adventure. When it comes to boating, one rule of etiquette to remember is not to wear black soles. Boats either have a white or wooden deck, and black soles can cover them in skid marks. Especially when you consider you may be going back and forth from the motion of the waves. Which brings us to another point, wear shoes with a comfortable, non-slip grip. Boats don’t stay flat, and they don’t stay still, so any shoe with a smooth sole will have you sliding all day long. People also tend to enjoy shoes that are easy to take off. If you are looking to catch a tan or just get your toes wet, you don’t want to spend five minutes taking off a pair of boots. Something that slips on and off like converse, flats, even flip flops are perfect footwear for a day out on the water.

To help with both sun and rain, a comfortable hat should also be brought on board. While making sure it is comfortable, make sure it also fits right so it doesn’t get blown off with the breeze. Also avoid jewelry that you are either fond of, or not sure how well it will stay attached to you while on the boat. Once a ring or bracelet slips off your wrist, it’s highly possible that it’s gone forever. While necklaces are okay to wear, if you are planning on being out in the sun be careful with them. They likely won’t get damaged, but you might find your tan interrupted with the design of the necklace. It is important to remember however, if you are going out on ocean water, there will be salt in the air, so if you have any metallic jewelry, you may want to wash it off in fresh water once you get back to shore.

Of course, the most important thing for going out on the water isn’t the outfit, it’s the boat. If you haven’t gotten your boat yet, it’s not too late to get one now.
